Bernstein is Professor Emerita at Hunter College School of Nursing, City University of New York, where she taught advanced psychiatric nurse practitioner students and coordinated the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program. Her primary area of research is Asian American immigrants' mental health and healthcare disparities. Robert Kaplan is Advanced Senior Lecturer and Co-Principal Investigator of the Writing Research Lab in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stony Brook University, State University of New York. He teaches research writing to advanced undergraduate STEM students and is a science editor for public health researchers.
