A convert to Anglicanism, he was Britain's first and thus far only Prime Minister of Jewish heritage. J.A.W. Gunn retired in 2001 as Sir Edward Peacock professor, after forty years service to Queen's University in the Department of Political Science. Appointed full professor in 1970, he was Head of Department 1975-83 and was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1983. John P. Matthews was a professor emeritus of English at Queen's University, Kingston. Donald M. Schurman (1924-2013) was a professor of history at Queen's University. He also served at the Royal Military College. M.G. Wiebe is general editor emeritus of the Disraeli Project and was a professor of English at Queen's University.
