A major challenge for the future of psychoanalysis as a science and as a profession, both in theory and in practice, is the ongoing development of conceptual, clinical and empirical research. This volume brings together some of the foremost contributors to this complex issue and should be of interest to all who are interested in the fundamental nature of the discipline of psychoanalysis and its continued growth and health.

"This volume challenges any belief in a uniform view of science and related research activities. Indeed, the choice of authors in this collection illustrates the diversity of psychoanalytic research cultures across the International Psychoanalytic Association. It shows how the basic tenets of psychoanalysis are being critically examined through various approaches. The relations and differences between clinical, conceptual and empirical research are discussed, taking into account epistemological, cultural and historical factors."--Anne-Marie Sandler
