As I began to read I soon learned this was more than the standard approach to commentary. Gary sets out to uncover what can be learned about the author Paul as well as unwrap his letter. I was soon apprehensive that I was in over my head. Not having advanced degrees or a good grasp of Greek (perhaps an acquaintance with it) I was not sure I would gain much from the reading. As I continued I was impressed with Gary's thorough research and documentation. Even more impressed with his ability to lead me through the mountain peaks and valleys in a way even I could understand and appreciate. I read the entire book in shorter time than I expected. It was a great exercise in stimulating the my meager knowledge of Greek, increasing my understanding of theories and methods of translation, as well as opening my eyes to a better understanding of Paul and his letter to the close friends and fellow Christians living in Thessalonica.
