One of the English-speaking worlds most influential philosophers, John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) wrote on countless topics, including logic, politics, womens rights, legal history, medicine, and the philosophy of science. Ann P. Robson is a professor emeritus in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. JOHN M. ROBSON was born educated in Toronto, graduating from the University of Toronto (B.A. 1951, M.A. 1953, PH.D. 1956). After lecturing at the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta, he joined the staff as Victoria College, University of Toronto, where he is now Professor of English. He is Associate Editor of the Collected Works of John Stuart Mill, and he also edited Edmund Burkes Appel from the New to the Old Whigs, J.S. Mill: A Selection, and Editing Nineteenth-Century Texts.
