"Examining the evolution of the Greater Philadelphia region from its origins to the present, this volume- drawn from the online Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia-helps readers visualize the many interconnections across this region, whether natural, man-made, or cultural. The book argues that regions work best when residents, divided in space but linked in multiple ways through social and economic connections, possess shared knowledge about where they live. The book thus enriches civic identity even as it provides concise information for the general public. Informed by the latest scholarship and richly illustrated with historic and contemporary maps and illustrations, The Greater Philadelphia Region marks the nation's 250th anniversary with a vivid portrait of the great city where Independence was declared, even as it animates and explains that city's vital role in shaping the land, the people, and the ties between them"-- Provided by publisher.
