Man's Search For Meaning

The deepest insights in the most simple words

1 oktober 2018

If you're in pain, read this book. If you're scared, read this book. If you are lost, read this book. If you are happy, read this book. If you have time, read this book. If you don't have time, read this book. Read this book, read this book.

"We who lived in the concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms--to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

Milk and Honey

a solid book of poetry

26 december 2017

Kaur's poems are simple, yet profound. Her word choices and illustrations create vivid imagery. I stopped to reread and ponder several of the poems. I like writing that stirs my emotions and makes me think, and this book certainly did that.

Manhattan Beach

Don't expect a page turning book

18 september 2018

The themes were clear but action was missing. Sometimes I felt like I was watching a black and white movie on television. I felt like there were pieces that were interesting but not the collective whole. I really disliked the time in a lifeboat for Eddie. Historically there are some interesting snapshots of the Depression, organized crime, WWII and the war effort. I knew nothing about private shipping during the war, because of that the book has merit.
I would hesitate to tell a friend to read it because I think they might get mad at me.

Little Fires Everywhere

Quick read, Good story.

18 september 2018

I would have given this book 5 stars after reading the first third of the book but got bogged down on Mia's section. Too much detail about her past, chapters were so long, & there were several. I just wanted to get on with the main story. Also, the custody issue. As a social worker the judge does look at what is in the best interest of the child. But the birth mother & father, they have a timeframe to make every possible effort to find them. A person doesn't just drop her baby at a fire house & a fireman who works there & his wife adopt the baby. There are legal issues here, but as I always say, it's only a book.
Characters are well developed, the only unlikable character was Elena, very mean spirited. Pearl had a connection with all 4 kids. Book certainly had shadings of the Stepford Wives. Will I read this author's other book. Probably.

I Found You

Immersive Novel That Will Keep You Guessing

2 juli 2018

The only problem with this book is that I didn't want to put it down. From the first page, the descriptions had me completely immersed in the setting. I love beach towns and this sounds like a place I'd want to visit. Then I met the characters, who sounded so real that I couldn't help but care about them. The author kept me guessing about who "Frank" was, almost right up to the reveal. The varying points of view between chapters helped keep the mystery going and only added layers of complexity as to his identity. This book was part mystery, part romance, and part tragedy, adding up to a story I could not stop thinking about!

Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder

Great middle-of-the-road guide!

26 december 2017

I highly recommend this book to both those newly diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder and those who have been living with these conditions for years. The author takes a middle approach and discusses both traditional medications as well as alternative treatments, making it a good starting place. It is highly readable, with stories from fellow sufferers sprinkled throughout, but also contains the latest scientific research as of publication.

You Know You Want This

Spellbinding!

23 maj 2019

An absolutely spellbinding collection of stories. I devoured the book in one sitting, and, like so many of the characters within, might have benefited from a bit more self-control, because now I want more! As with "Cat Person," many of these stories will draw you in and, step-by-step, lead you to a much darker, unexpected, but not entirely unfamiliar place.

My favorites were "Look at Your Game, Girl," "The Good Guy," and "The Matchbox Sign," but I enjoyed the collection top to bottom. Although the topics and genres are diverse, there is a clear thread that runs throughout the book: our desires are deeply part of us, yet they are often beyond our control, and they sometimes make us do terrible, unspeakable things.

Think Happy

to start your day!

23 maj 2019

This is a really good way to start your day. If you're like me, sometimes you have trouble focusing on the bigger picture and not on the small little things that can really get you down. I like to read a little of this before I start my day to remind myself to be mindful and grateful.

Skellig

Honest exploration of conflicting feelings toward

23 maj 2019

A beautiful children's fantasy novel. A gentle, open and honest exploration of a young boy's conflicting feelings regarding his deathly-ill baby sister, his parents, and his friends.

Almond deftly refrains from answering every question (e.g., the exact nature of Skellig) or tediously driving home every symbolism, leaving room for delightful contemplation.

Superb writing throughout. The last paragraph of Chapter Two, in all it's starkness, is absolutely heart-wrenching. The initial discovery of Skellig was heart-pounding, and the closing chapters heart-lifting. I won't soon forget "27 and 53"!

Themes of forgiveness, family love and loyalty, and non-judgmental acceptance of those who don't fit into society's mold.
